In what was one of the most dominant performances in a major tournament ever, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi made history at the 2012 World Series of Poker on Thursday night in becoming the first man to ever win the $50,000 Poker Players’ Championship twice.

The eight men who came back for action on Thursday had waded through 108 of the best players in the game for this shot at the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy, the WSOP bracelet and a payday of $1,451,527. At the start of the final day of play, Mizrachi was atop the leaderboard with his 3.648 million in chips but right behind him was 2012 WSOP bracelet winner Andy Bloch (himself a runner-up in this tournament to the late Memorial Trophy namesake in 2006, the first year it was held) with 3.598 million. Other contenders included a strong contingent from Europe in Stephen ChidwickLuke ‘FullFlush’ Schwartz and Bruno Fitoussi, along with two time WSOP bracelet winner Bill ChenRoland Israelashvili and Chris Klodnicki.

What can you say about Phil Hellmuth that hasn’t already been said? The guy knows how to play poker. Hellmuth, already the most prolific World Series of Poker (WSOP) player of all time, won his record twelfth WSOP bracelet early Monday morning, defeating a strong group of competitors at the final table of Event #18: $2,500 Seven Card Razz.

“The Poker Brat” had already accumulated the more bracelets than any other poker player in history – eleven – going into the event, so this one served to distance himself from the competition. Both Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan are next in line with ten each, followed by Johnny Moss with nine. If anyone is going to catch Hellmuth, the best chance in the foreseeable future would have to go to Phil Ivey, who, at age 36, has already won eight of them. Erik Seidel, also with eight, may also have a shot, but really, “having a shot” is all relative.

Signs Pointing to Full Tilt Poker’s Rebirth

poker videosThey say that when there’s smoke, there’s fire, and the poker community is beginning to see more smoke coming from the direction of Full Tilt Poker. This week, a couple pieces of evidence have surfaced that point to the possibility of the re-opening of the once high-flying online poker room in the not-too-distant future.

The first plume of smoke came in the form of a gaming license application by a subsidiary of Full Tilt Poker. On March 23rd, Orinic Limited applied for a Category 2 online gambling license with the Alderney Gaming Control Commission (AGCC). Orinic had previously held a Category 1 license, which does not allow it to actually handle customer funds. Though the Full Tilt subsidiary did have this license suspended by the AGCC last summer, it was never completely revoked, unlike the rest of the companies in the Full Tilt family.
